Massive roadblock a success

This was part of their arrive alive and zero tolerance towards road rule benders campaign.

A total of 85 road rule benders were caught and slapped with heavy traffic fines during a massive roadblock on the R28 on 6 December.

This was announced by the Randfontein Traffic Department which says that this was part of their arrive alive and zero tolerance towards road rule benders campaign.

A breakdown of the statistics indicate that exactly 20 motorists were caught driving without driver’s licenses while another 20 were caught for driving vehicles without license discs.

The department also announced that nine vehicles were discontinued from the public roads while 12 motorists received fines for operating vehicles that had numerous defects.

These are some of the statistics recorded by Randfontein traffic officers in conjunction with Randfontein SAPS, local security companies and other relevant departments.

According to Randfontein traffic chief Kenny Mampondo, these are shocking statistics which continue to paint a picture of how negligent motorists continue to behave on the public roads.

“Despite awareness campaigns, we still find that motorists do not abide by road rules and this does not sit well with us.

“We are in a position where we cannot allow accidents to be claiming more lives on the public roads and I will not have it on my watch.

“We will continue to enforce road rules and curb destructive elements on our roads,” says Mampodon.

He warns that traffic officers will be flooding the streets of Randfontein this festive season and urges motorists to constantly be aware and vigilant when driving.

“Apart from doing our bit in enforcing bylaws, we want motorists to take responsibility when driving and be aware of how their actions might affect the lives of other road users,” says Mampondo.

He adds that the department wishes everyone a safe journey to and from their destinations this festive season and hopes that they will have no fatalities recorded.

Randfontein Executive Mayor Sylvia Thebenare was also at the roadblock handing out pamphlets and interacting with motorists.

She urged motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike to exercise road safety and enjoy their Christmas holidays and have a prosperous new year.
