Zero tolerance this Festive season

We have already embarked on numerous road blocks since October in preparation for the festive season and we are more than ready for this campaign.

Randfontein — The Randfontein Traffic Department is set to embark on a massive Arrive Alive campaign this Festive Season throughout Randfontein and urges that motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike abide by road rules.

This comes from Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo who says that traffic officers will be applying a zero tolerance approach this Festive Season and will root out destructive elements on the roads, be it drunken drivers, those operating unroadworthy vehicles and basic road rule benders.

“We have already embarked on numerous roadblocks since October in preparation for the festive season and we are more than ready for this campaign.

“We want to send out a message to motorists that traffic officers will have no mercy for road rule benders and that should they be found, they will face the full might of the law,” says Mampondo.

He adds that since the inception of their roadblocks in October, they have produced some shocking statistics with regards to traffic fines being issued and road rule benders being caught.

“Despite the fact that we have done well over the months, we will not allow that to calm us down and hinder our efforts for this campaign.

“We aim on making the streets safe for everyone no matter what,” says Mampondo.

Mampondo says that while it is good and well to tighten the law on motorists, pedestrians and cyclists also need to be looked at in terms of road rules.

“Statistics indicate that pedestrians contribute to accidents by six per cent and that is rather unfortunate.

“As a result, we will take to numerous communities in Randfontein to have a road safety talks with residents in order to create awareness,

“You will be surprised to see how many people disregard the pedestrian crossings set out for them,” says Mampondo.
