Police chase lead to five arrested

They are suspected to be involved in housebreakings in Greenhills and its surrounds.

A high speed chase between Randfontein police officers and five suspects travelling in a Toyota Fortuner on 28 November led to their arrest at the corner of Korhaan Road and Horingbek Avenue in Helikon Park.

The vehicle matched the description given by residents of Greenhills, of a vehicle allegedly seen during house robbery incidents in the area.

It was spotted by a police officer in Finsbury, who decided to follow the vehicle.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, the police officer spotted the suspicious vehicle and signaled it to stop but to no avail.

The vehicle sped away and the officer gave chase.

“He called for back up and other police officers joined in the chase,” says Ernst.

“Luckily, they were able to close in on the men in Helikon Park.” says Ernst.

She adds that during the high speed chase, the suspects threw implements used for breaking into vehicles and the theft thereof out of the car windows.

The suspects have been arrested and will be charged on a count of attempted murder as they almost drove over a police officer.

According to Ernst, they are likely to face other charges once a police investigation is concluded

Upon the Herald’s arrival at the scene, the suspects were lying on the ground in full view of residents.

A set of false number plates was also found during a police search in their vehicle.
