Burst water pipe raises concern

A burst water pipe in Eike Park raises concern among residents of the area.

After nearly two weeks, a burst water pipe in Jan Fiskaal Street, Eike Park, still concerns residents in the surrounding area.

According to DA Ward 7 chairperson, Ellik de Lange, the residents noted that there was water gushing through the tar surface.

De Lange immediately informed the Randfontein Local Municipality of the problem. This was on 8 November.

“Municipal workers only responded to my call three days later, on Monday 11 November” says De Lange.

With the municipal workers’ arrival, they immediately started to investigate the problem and found that the valve where 122 Jan Fiskaal Street’s water line meets the main line, had burst.

“The workers dug a hole around the valve to identify the problem. As soon as they identified what’s wrong, they called the Randfontein Local Municipality only to find out that there is no stock to repair the valve,” says De Lange.

With the Randfontein Herald‘s visit to the scene, the hole surrounding the valve was still open, and flooded with water and, according to De Lange, the Municipal workers only stuck a tree branch in the whole and put up reflective tape around the hole.

The Herald visited the scene on 19 November.

“For nearly two weeks, this water pipe has resulted in the wastage of thousands of liters of water.

“This when we are supposed to save water.

“This is unacceptable and should be a top priority for our local municipality,” says De Lange.

The Herald has contacted municipal spokesperson Lucky Chiya and this regard.

Chiya says that the will investigate the incident.
