Local clinic burned down

This is to air grievances with regards to the lack of service delivery in the area.

A local clinic and a creche were burned down on 4 November following a massive protest action at the Zenzele informal settlement.

Residents of the area took to the streets demanding that the Randfontein Local Municipality implement proper service delivery in the area in the form of water and electricity

According to a resident of the area who does not wish to be named, the Randfontein Local Municipality is looking down on their community as they have been waiting for service delivery for some years.

“We are tired of waiting.

“We too want to live in houses and enjoy proper access to water and electricity,” says the man.

According to Randfontein Local Municipal spokesperson Lucky Chiya, the protest is not a call for service delivery in the area but rather an act criminality and hooliganism.

“This has nothing to do with service delivery.

“If so, then why do people burn the very same resources that you will end up needing?

“Just last week alone, residents of the area were looting foreign national’s shops and today they want to cry for service delivery.

“People are currently feeling disgruntled and mixing their personal issues with those of service delivery,” says Chiya.

He adds that residents of Zenzele are aware of the fact that the municipality has plans to place those who have been approved for housing in their respective homes once the housing project has been completed.

“We have engaged with residents of the area and they understand the situation at hand.

“They know that the municipality is currently doing its best,” says Chiya.

Meanwhile, Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo says that traffic officers together with Randfontein police had their hands full with the frustrated residents.

However he does confirm that the situation is currently under control in the area as residents agreed to disperse after some time.

  1. I think what the residents did was wrong, but how can people live in a place where there is no proper service delivery, the municipality keeps on making promises that they are unable to fulfil and there are People who applied for houses from 1996 but they havent got them yet, atleast even if they Dont get those houses they must supply them with electricity and water that would be very much better
