Bekkersdal police station attacked

Approximately eight police vehicles were destroyed.

The Bekkersdal police station was attacked and eight state vehicles destroyed last night (3 November) by frustrated residents of the area.

This follows a fruitless meeting between the concerned residents of Bekkersdal and the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Lechesa Tsenoli which failed to yield any solutions with regard to the ongoing problems in the area.

Residents of the area took to the streets and attacked the Bekkersdal police station with bricks and stones.

According to Westonaria SAPS spokesperson Thembi Masango, the residents went on the rampage at approximately 6pm in the evening.

“We had our hands full with the residents of the area as we were trying to control the situation.

“Residents threw large bricks at the police building and left windows shattered

“A string of police vehicles were also attacked and two other private cars were destroyed as well,”says Masango.

She adds that fortunately no one was injured during the attack.

“No one was injured nor arrested during the attack however we condemn the violence,” says Masango.
