Bekkersdal clean-up campaign on track

This comes after residents took to the streets and embarked on three-weeks long violent protest actions in the area.

The massive task of cleaning up Bekkersdal after weeks of violent protests has begun.

Westonaria Local Municipality embarked on a major clean-up campaign, roping in municipal workers as well as residents to remove rubble from the streets.

This comes after residents took to the streets and embarked on three-weeks long violent protest actions in the area.

The Westonaria Local Municipality has estimated that damages amounting to approximately R11,2 millionwere incurred during the protests.

According to Westonaria Local Municipality spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe, the clean-up campaign is one of the many projects aimed at restoring normality in the area.

“Before proper damage control starts, we have to clean up the area to ensure proper movement of vehicles coming in and out of the township.

“The first thing that the council decided to do was to embark on this clean-up campaign in order to have bricks, burnt tyres and all other rubbish that was strewn all over the place removed,” says Madiehe.

He adds that this is just the beginning of the municipal projects following the strike actions and says that change will soon be underway.
