Look out for payment scams

The man received a bogus notification message of the transaction and decided to check with his bank.

A new crime trend has emerged in Randfontein and has EPR security concerned about its clients and residents in general.

This comes after one of their clients, a local dog breeder was almost defrauded when he was trying to sell two of his dogs.

Two men approached the breeder and offered to buy two dogs for a certain amount of money.

They offered to deposit the money into his account and while the transaction was underway, the man noticed that something was fishy with the suspects.

According to EPR operations manager Mac van Zyl, the man received a notification message that the transaction was successful and decided to double check with his bank.

“The client checked his notification message and it indicated that a certain amount of money was deposited into his account.

“He stepped to the side and verified this with his bank and he discovered that no payment was made in his account,” says van Zyl

He adds that the client pressed the panic button and managed to keep both suspects in his house long enough for EPR reaction officers to show up The suspects were handed over to police for further investigation.

Van Zyl urges residents to ensure that they do not let their guard down when dealing with people or companies in terms of buying and selling goods.

“Make sure you know who you are dealing with.,” says Van Zyl.

“If any money is supposedly transferred into your account, try by all means to verify this with your bank.

“Do not release any items until you are certain that the transaction is valid.”
