Community turns on foreigners

"They are the main cause of problems in the area."

Residents of the Zenzele informal settlement in Randfontein went on the rampage attacking foreign nationals and looting their shops on 30 October.

According to residents, they want the foreigners to leave the area as they apparently do not contribute to the area.

Residents also accuse the foreigners of bringing drugs into the area.

“They are the main cause of problems in the area,” says one resident.

“They take business opportunities away from local resident as they open spaza shops everywhere, thereby closing the market for locals.

“Apart from that, they bring drugs into this place and keep us out of work.

“We have decided that we will not stand for it anymore,” says the man.

Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst has confirmed unrest and says that the police had evacuate a large group of foreign nationals out of the area for their own safety.

“At this point I cannot give figures as to how many shops were looted, but the situation is now under control and officers are keeping a close watch on further developments.”
