Randfontein stands up against crime

Randfontein is ready to roll up their sleeves in the fight against crime.

The community of Randfontein, is ready and committed to root out criminal elements within their community.

Brandvlei, Four Square and Toekomsrus Shoprite U-Save were among areas visited by Randfontein SAPS and officials from the Gauteng Department of Community Safety during a crime awareness roadshow recently.

During interactions with community members, crimes such as substance abuse, assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, rape, armed robbery, gangsterism and domestic violence were cited as prevalent in and around Randfontein.

Three taverns in Mohlakeng Extension three, were also said to be a major contributory factor to crime in the area.

Most victims of crime in Mohlakeng were patrons from these taverns, which are often targeted by criminals.

Community Policing Forum Chairperson in Randfontein, Zaheer Gangat, encouraged the community to take part in community safety structures within their localities such as CPF, youth desk and the patroller movement.

During the interaction with the community, members of the SAPS and officials from the Department discouraged communities from creating a market for criminals by buying stolen goods.

Addressing community members Captain Freddy Balepile urged community members to make use of sector numbers to report criminal activities in the area.

“I appeal to each and every one of you to call sector policing numbers so that police will be able to respond promptly to incidents.

“We need to join hands to root out criminal elements in our area.

“Let us join safety structures in our numbers and assist by being the eyes and ears of the police,” he said.

Two community members who confessed to abusing drugs were also willing to give information to the police that could lead to the arrest of the supplier of the drugs in the area.
