Violent protests spread to Randfontein

Residents of the Oliver Tambo informal settlement in Randfontein staged a violent service delivery protest on 15 October.

While service delivery protests continue to disrupt daily life in Bekkersdal, the Randfontein Local Municipality has also now come under fire from residents of informal settlements demanding service delivery.

The latest incident occurred at the Oliver Tambo informal settlement just outside Randfontein where residents threw stones, blocked off the Ventersdorp Road, and even vandalised police vehicles.

Upon the Herald’s arrival at the scene, protestors pelted stones as a warning to not get too close.

The SAPS riot squad was in close attendance and a police Nyala was sent in to try and scatter the violent crowds.

According to DA ward Councillor Peter Dick, the residents demand basic services and will not speak to anyone else but Randfontein Executive mayor, Sylvia Thebenare.

“The mayor was called early this morning when it became known what the protestors want, but she is yet to arrive,” says Dick.

Meanwhile violent service delivery protests are continuing in Bekkersdal just outside Westonaria.
