Bekkersdal protestors arrested

Tensions run high as Bekkersdal residents embark on yet another violent protest.

Police have arrested 27 people in Bekkersdal for public violence on 15 October in a day marked by violence.

Violent service delivery protests have once again flared up in the area, with residents continuing to demand the disbandment of the Westonaria Local Municipality.

Protestors pelted stones at the Bekkersdal police station and damaged a number of police vehicles.

A petrol bomb was also hurled at the police station.

Rubber bullets were fired to disperse the protesters, but this only enraged thew angry residents more.

Shops in the Westonaria CBD have closed as a precaution and there are no taxi’s or busses available.

Residents have vowed to make Westonaria ungovernable until their demands are met.
