Vehicle theft on the rise in Randfontein

It does not take much effort for criminals to break the window and walk away with one's purse and even worse, one's vehicle.

The theft of motor vehicles and the theft out of motor vehicle incidents seem to be on the rise in Randfontein now that we are approaching the festive season and residents are urged to safeguard their vehicles.

This was revealed during a community engagement forum where police revealed that these crimes are among the most reported crimes at the Randfontein SAPS.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, people should always be careful

“Never leave any valuables in your vehicle. Not even for just a few minutes.

“|These are exactly the opportunities that criminals look out for.

“They can break into your vehicle in a few seconds,” says Ernst.

She adds that in cases recorded recently, people have had valuable items such as laptops, cellphones, and other valuables stolen out of their cars.

“I urge people not to leave their ID documents in their cars as these can be used by criminals.

Älso, never save your banking details on your cellular phone in case it gets stolen.

She adds that to avoid becoming part of the statistics, people should take extra precaution”s and always be aware of their surroundings.

“Even after activating your car’s central locking, it will do you no harm to double check if its locked.

“There are still criminals using gate remotes to interrupt the frequency of your vehicle’s central locking system,” says Ernst.
