Another sewage saga in Greenhills

This goes to show that they are claming ignorance to serious problems.

Six manholes in a veld in Greenhills are spilling raw sewage into the veld and residents say that they have had enough.

According to residents, this has been going on for a very long time.

Residents say they have reported the issue to the municipality on numerous occasions, but to no avail.

The Herald has been inundated with phone calls from residents of the area stating that the sewage has been overflowing for months now and the smell is getting unbearable.

During a recent site visit, the Herald together with DA Local Ward Councilor Peter Dick saw sewage overflowing from the six manholes and flowing into the veld accross the road from Thinus de Jongh Street in Greenhills.

According to Dick, the council is well aware of the problem.

“I myself have reported this problem on many occasions,” says Dick.

“As a councilor, I have done my bit, evengoing as far as getting the relevant officials to come to the sight in order to witness the problem first hand, but clearly that did not help.

“I cant believe that months later, we are back here sitting with the same stinking problem,” says Dick.

He adds that the council has, at one point, claimed to have fixed the persisting problem, but this is far from the truth.

“This goes to show that they are claiming ignorance to serious problems that have serious health implications for the residents of this area,” says Dick.

Meanwhile, the Herald has forwarded a list of questions to the Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya and awaits response.
