Taxi stuck in pothole

The massive ditch is 19 metres deep and 2.0 metres wide.

A section of the road on the corner of Homestead Avenue and North Way extension caved in, leaving a huge ditch of 1,9 metres deep and 2,0 metres wide, in which a taxi got stuck.

A Herald journalist found the taxi on its one side in the hole while authorities were planning on how to remove it.

Allegedly the incident may have been caused by a burst water pipe underneath the road that caused it to cave in. However this cannot be confirmed.

At the time of the incident, the taxi was carrying 15 passengers but fortunately no one sustained any injuries.

Taxi driver Phineas Molema, who is a member of the Randfontein Taxi Owners Association, said he was shocked when the incident occurred.

“We always read in the local paper about the bad condition of the roads here in Randfontein but I never thought that this would happen.

“This is a result of the dilapidating infrastructure that the council fails to attend to.

“I hope that they have learned from this,” said Molema.

He added that the association would institute action against the council because of the incident.

The Herald contacted Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya for comment who said that he would contact the relevant department and revert back with comment.
