Police seize counterfeit cash worth R1 million at local mall

It is alleged that the money is from a syndicate and was supposed to be exchanged at the shopping centre.

The Randfontein police seized old counterfeit R100 notes estimated to be worth R1 million at the Village Square Mall this morning (25 September) at approximately 10am.

This follows a tip-off from an anonymous person which led to the search at the mall and subsequently, the discovering of a canvass bag containing the cash.

It is alleged that the money is from a syndicate and was supposed to be exchanged at the shopping centre.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, police officers received a tip-off regarding a drop off of the money at the mall and immediately reacted swiftly.

“Having received the information, SAPS members were deployed in the parking area at the shopping centre under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Gert Kruger.

“They were specifically on the lookout for a person or persons carrying large bags,” says Ernst.

She adds that in short space of time, the police spotted a suspicious man carrying a bag and immediately closed in on him.

“Unfortunately the suspect saw officers coming and dropped the bag to the ground.

“He managed to disappear in the crowd and we could not spot him thereafter.

“As a result, the police could not pursue the search because they were unable to identify the person from a distance. ” says Ernst.

Police officers at the scene searched the green canvas bag and discovered stacks of R100 notes.

So far, no arrests have been made and the counterfeit money has been handed as an exhibit at the Randfontein SAPS.

Anyone who might have any information with regards to this is urged to contact Kruger on 011 278-8100.
