Dead baby found in drainpipe

A fully formed fetus stuck inside a sewerage pipe was discovered to be the cause of a recurring drain blockage on Pessan Street, Randfontein.

Residents trying to get to the bottom of a persistent drain blockage in Pessan Street, Randfontein, made a gruesome discovery on 6 September.

According to one resident, the drain has been blocked since Monday 2 September, and after eventually giving up hope of the municipality arriving to clear the blockages, residents took it upon themselves to try and unblock the drain, which is situated in the backyard of a house in the street.

“Some of the men in the street decided to dig open the drainpipe to try and unblock it, and that is when they found the baby,” says the woman who wishes to remain anonymous.

“After discovering the body, they placed it in a yellow plastic bucket and then called the police.

Police officers at the scene were obviously distressed at the sight of already composing little body and most opted to stay well clear of it.

According to residents, a woman who has been occupying the house and was approximately seven months pregnant, moved suddenly and without any word to her friends and neighbours over the past weekend.

“I cannot understand how someone can do something like this,” says another neighbour.

“If you do not want the baby, rather go for an abortion or give it up for adoption.”
