Six cars crushed by falling tree

Some of the cars are beyond repair and can be regarded as write-offs.

A massive tree at the Greenhills Stadium crushed at least six cars when it toppled over on 30 August.

The owners of the cars in question were playing soccer at the time of the incident, and fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Upon the Herald’s arrival at the scene, municipal workers were hard at work trying to cut up the fallen tree in order to remove it and free the cars.

According to one of the stadium’s management personnel who does not wish to be named, it is unfortunate that this had to happen.

“We recently cut down a few tree’s in the stadium’s vicinity in order to avoid such instances, but we were critisized by local ward Councillor Peter Dick.

“He was quick to run to the Herald and reported that we should not be cutting down the trees because we are taking away from the beauty of the town.

“Now this massive tree has fallen on top of these cars and we are sitting with a problem that could have been avoided.”

According to Dick, the stadium’s management should not shift the blame on him for a problem he did not cause.

“This has nothing to do with the fact that I am against the municipality cutting down trees but it has everything to do with the fact that they do not maintain them.

“Had the municipality taken measures to maintain the trees and cut off the excess branches regularly, they would not have been sitting with the problem of trees falling over,” says Dick. “The trees are supposed to be inspected regularly so that any trees that do pose a danger may be cut down.

“I don’t have a problem with that. I complained about the indiscriminate cutting down of all trees in the stadium.”
