Residents are fed up with crime

"The time when we will take the law into our own hands is approaching fast."

Following a series of articles regarding criminal activities in Randfontein, the Herald has been inundated with calls from residents saying that they are about to take matters into their own hands if the police do not intervene.

This comes after an incident on 13 August when Johnny Meyer was gunned down brutally in his driveway by suspects who followed him home after he had withdrawn a large amount of money at a local bank.

This, however, is just one of the many crime-related incidents that have residents hot under the collar.

According to a resident who wishes not to be named, crime in Randfontein is getting out of hand and the police are failing dismally in preventing it.

“The time when we are going to take the law into our own hands is approaching rapidly.

“The local private security companies are doing a far better job than the SAPS.

“Every night before we sleep, we pray to God to guard us one more night and we are thankful that we may live to see another day,” says the resident.

According to EPR Security Operations Manager Mac van Zyl, residents should not lose faith in the police and can rest assured that the Randfontein police are doing their best to fight crime.

“The police are doing their best to curb crime and we work hand in hand with them.

“People also must realise that they too have a role to play in working with the police by reporting crime and alerting them of suspicious people in their communities.

“It is incorrect to say that one force is better than the other because we all are working towards the same goal and that is to eradicate the criminal element in our communities,” says Van Zyl.
