Bekkersdal residents fed up with sewage spills

Clearly our pleas are falling on deaf ears.

Residents of Bekkersdal are furious at the Westonaria Local Municipality for allegedly ignoring their outcries with regard to a burst sewage pipe at the corner of Selope Street and Panyapanya Road.

The Herald was called out to witness the disgusting scene and saw used toilet paper and feces flowing down the streets next to the local clinic and the local taxi rank.

Street vendors were selling unpackaged vegetables and other food at the side of the road.

According to DA member Joseph Santho who spoke on behalf of the DA PR Councillor Oupa Letheka, this has been an ongoing problem for some time now.

“We have informed the council about this persisting problem and to date, nothing has been done. Clearly our pleas are falling on deaf ears because it seems as though no one is prepared to do anything about this.

“This is a health hazard for everyone concerned.

“If residents need proof that their municipality does not care for them, this is it,” says Santho.

The Herald has approached the Westonaria Local Municipality spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe who said that he would contact the relevant department and revert back with comment.
