Two men shot during ATM robbery

Two men were wounded during a robbery at an ATM at the Village Square Mall.

Two men were shot during an ATM robbery at the Village Square Mall on 31 July.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst, the men were drawing money at the ATM and had their families with them when they were attacked by two robbers.

The 23-year-old complainant and his brother, their father and an uncle were in the middle of making a withdrawal when they were approached by two men demanding money.

The father refused and the suspects opened fire on them.

One of the brothers and the father each was shot in the leg and the rest of the family tried to find cover.

After the shooting, the suspects demanded the victim’s car keys, but this was also refused.

The suspects then apparently fled on foot.

“Police officers were called to the scene and the injured victims were removed to a local hospital,” says Ernst.

“The investigation team started taking down statements and doing preliminary investigations, and discovered that one of the witnesses was not honest in his portrayal of the incident.

“They interrogated him and subsequently arrested him.

“The officers then managed to track down two other suspects who were positively linked to the incident.

“All three suspects, aged 38, 37 and 27 were arrested within four hours after the incident.”
