DA officials investigate water contamination scandal

The sewerage infrastructure in Randfontein is a crisis and needs to be treated as such.

Following a series of articles about the scandal of contaminated water in Randfontein, numerous DA provincial personnel flocked to the town to investigate the matter on 25 July.

Led by DA Ward Councillors Sina Erasmus and Peter Dick they took to numerous areas where water was said to be contaminated with sewage.

According to DA Gauteng Agriculture and Rural Development spokesperson Thomas Walters, the ailing sewerage infrastructure in Randfontein is a crisis and needs to be treated as such.

“Already boreholes as well as streams are being polluted.

“This impacts people’s health and clearly the municipality simply is not doing its job.

“From what we have seen, this is a potential environmental disaster and action needs to be taken,” says Walters.

The Randfontein Local Municipality opted to distance itself from the scandal and informed the Herald and councillors that they would not take responsibility for the livestock compromised until water testing and an autopsy is done on the contaminated livestock.

This despite the fact that the Herald had received information from a reliable source within the municipality that the machinery used to filter feces at the sewerage farm have been broken for some time.

Erasmus and Dick say that they have taken a sample of the water for testing and await results.

Meanwhile the Herald is still overwhelmed with complaints from other residents regarding this issue.
