Residents set to strike over nepotism in municipality

Apparently 3000 CV's were destroyed.

Westonaria residents are set to embark on a massive strike outside the municipal building over alleged nepotism within the Westonaria Local Municipality on 26 July.

Residents are up in arms over recently advertised job posts and accuse municipality’s Xhosa speaking officials of hiring their Xhosa relatives who are without relevant qualifications.

According to a furious resident Andisa Ngqwebo, this has been going on for some time but they are now fed up with it.

“The municipality recently advertised job vacancies and needless to say, the unemployed people from the area jumped for the opportunity.

“I stand to be corrected when I say this but I believe that few people from this community were hired.

“I understand that we cannot all be hired but we have been informed by a source within the municipality that apparently 3000 CV’s were destroyed without even following the proper procedure,” says Ngqwebo.

She adds that much to her surprise, two months later they received information that most people hired for the advertised posts are related to Xhosa-speaking people in office within the municipality.

“This has been an ongoing thing for some time and it needs to stop.

“If that that is not nepotism then I don’t know what is and it is only a matter of time before it causes a tribal war,” says Ngqwebo.

The Herald has contacted the Westonaria Local Municility spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe who says that he will investigate the matter and revert back with comment.
