Vehicle thefts on the rise

Vehicle related crimes have escalated sharply in Randfontein.

Motor vehicle thefts and thefts out of motor vehicles have skyrocketed in and around Randfontein.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson, Captain Appel Erst, it has become apparent during the last few weeks that these crimes have increased dramatically in Randfontein.

According to Ernst, the worst affected areas are Greenhills, the Randfontein CBD – especially around Mair Reef Road, Village Street and the parking area at the SARS offices, and on the agricultural holdings (plots and farms) areas, where especially vehicles that are not parked in garages are targeted.

According to Ernst, people should always ensure that their vehicles are locked and the windows are closed when they are not in their vehicles.

“Even when you are only out of the vehicle for a minute, rather be safe than sorry,” says Ernst.

“It only takes a few seconds to grab something from a parked vehicle and criminal know how to do this without being noticed.”

Ernst once again cautions against leaving valuables in cars.

“Anything of value or anything that might be perceived as being of value, or of containing something that may be valuable will lure thieves to your vehicle.

“Rather make sure there is nothing of value in your car, or lock away your valuables in the boot or behind the seat if you are driving a bakkie.”

Ernst says that thieves go for items like handbags, briefcases, GPS devices and cellular phones and car radios, so it’s best to never leave any such items in the car.

“If at all possible, remove the radio or unclip the radio face when you are out of the car.

“Also, do not leave CDs lying in the car or anywhere where they may be visible from outside the car.”

Erst also cautions residents t never leave children unattended in the car – not even for a moment.

“Rather take them with you,” says Ernst.

“Children often innocently allow access to your car and belongings to criminals.

“This is also a dangerous practice since your children are also vulnerable targets.”

Ersnt says that under no circumstance should one get out of your vehicle in approached by a pedestrian who indicates that there is something wrong with your vehicle.

“Do not even open the window for them,” says Ernst.

“I realise it may seem rude but one is rather safe than sorry. Be vigilant when you are parked. Be conscious of your surroundings and don’t get distracted.

“When parking your vehicle, make use of properly lit areas.”

Ernst says that one should activate the car alarm even if only out of the vehicle for a minute.

“Don’t leave your vehicle idling when you run into a shop and when locking your vehicle with a remote device, ensure that the vehicle locks properly. Some criminals have access to “interfering devices” which disrupts the locking system in your vehicle.”
