Municipality fires back at striking workers

"It is disgusting for an opposition party leader to instigate protest action."

Following a massive protest action by residents from Waterworks informal settlement, the Westonaria Local Municipality has fired back with comment saying that everybody has a right to protest but they must also have the responsibility not to abuse that right.

Irate residents, up in arms about the apparent lack of service delivery in the area, marched to the Mayors office to deliver a memorandum of grievances to the Westonaria Local Municipality Executive Mayor Nonkoliso Tundzi on 11 July.

The furious residents were led by Cope PR Councilor Desmond Ndzipho who urged them not to back down on their demands and fight for service delivery in the form of houses, proper sanitation and water supply.

In response to this, the Westonaria Local Municipality spokesperson Kgabane Madiehe says that it is disgusting for a leader from an opposition party to carry himself in such a manner and instigate protest actions to get attention.

“We will not allow or tolerate people from outside our jurisdiction to come into the municipality in disguise and mislead our people.

“Ndzipho knows very well why we cannot provide houses for the residents of Waterworks informal settlement at this point in time.

“The fact of the matter is really that some areas are dolomite and we will not risk placing people in such places,” says Madiehe.

He adds that residents need not worry as there are plans to allocate those who qualify for housing to the ew Borwa housing development next to the N12.

“Council is till pursuing the issue of housing with the province.

“After the process is done, residents will be informed,” says Madiehe.
