Library celebrates international story day

Westonaria Library celedrates International Short Story Day along with the youth of Simunye.

“There is nothing as exciting as a short story, offering the condensed satisfaction of the reading experience.”

This the words stated by Righardt le Roux, Programme Librarian for Library Information Service for the greater Westonaria during local celebrations of International Short Story Day commemorated on 20 June 2013 at the Simunye Community Library.

As part of the commemoration, Koekie Meyer, Director of Library Information Service – Gauteng Division, spoke with library users at the Simunye Community Library. She made use of the occasion to hand over some books to ChristopherThemba, from TM Letlhake high school.

These youngsters have set up a school library within their school where kids can go and read for recreation or to look for information needed for school projects.

She also congratulated Christopher on getting third place during a recent poetry slam hosted in conjunction with Word and Sound at the Main Library in Westonaria and encouraged him and other budding young writers to continue writing as libraries in South Africa need people to capture local content.

She said that writing short pieces of creative work is like distilling the potency of a long novel, creating smaller pieces perfect for reading on the bus or taxi or during one’s lunch break.

Everything extraneous was strained off by the poet, leaving the reader with a diverse and exciting piece of literature.

During her walkabout Koekie also encouraged some of the 82 local youngsters coming to the library every Thursday for the Nali’bali Reading programme hosted by Programme Librarian Righardt le Roux, saying “it is by reading that we go places.”
