Water worth millions gushes to waste

Clearly this must amount to millions that we as tax payers have to fork out.

The Herald has uncovered that thousands of litres of clean water is being wasted at an old swimming pool pump house at the Riebeeck Lake.

Clean water is continually gushing from a pipe in the old pump house and going to waste.

This has been going on for at least two years, as the Herald has previously reported on this pipe.

According to one resident, who made the Herald aware of the situation, it has been going on for much longer than just two years.

“My question is, who is paying for this water?

“If every litre of water flowing out through municipal pipes is billed, then who gets billed for this?

“The area around the old pump house has become a small marsh.

The Herald together with reaction officers from EPR security Charl Kruger and Collin Bredt who say that they also came across the gushing water while on patrol in the area recently, took to the lake to investigate.

Upon arrival, the ground was flooded with clean water.

Reaction officer Kruger says that upon discovering this some time ago, he together with his colleague reported the matter to the Randfontein Local Municipality and is surprised that the problem still persists.

“I don’t understand how they cannot attend to this urgently.

“We are talking about thousands of litres of water running day and night.

“Clearly this must amount to millions that we as tax payers have to fork out through our rates and taxes,” says Kruger.

Municipal spokesperson Lucky Chiya was not immediately available for comment.
