SAPS embark on child protection campaign

Randfontein's Social Crime Prevention Unit held a child saftery campaign in Randfontein.

The Randfontein SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit in conjunction with the Department of Social Development and theDepartment of Education as well as other relevant stakeholders embarked on a crime prevention and awareness campaign in the form of a parade at the Mohlakeng Tennis Court recently.

The campaign was aimed at educating the youth about sexual crimes as well as encouraging them to report cases of abuse to the police.

According to Constable Olga Monama from the Social Crime Prevention unit, it is disturbing that children live in societies where grown men pursue them sexually.

“In order to do away with this kind of behaviour, children need to be informed that the police do not tolerate child abuse and will act against it.

“No one should violate your rights and you should speak up about it so that we can take action and prevent this sort of thing,” says Monama.

“We have to explore all avenues of getting children to pay attention to how serious these crimes are and how to act against them.

“They need to know that we as the SAPS, together with other relevant departments, are there for them and will never dare to turn them away,” says Monama.

After the forum, those present at the event let their hair down and took part in numerous sporting activities while others took to the streets accompanied by a brass band in order to get their message across.
