Toekomsrus residents are up in arms over a dysfunctional sewer pump station in in the area

The pump station, situated on the border of Toekomsrus and the mine dump, has been broken for some time now and residents say they cannot stand the overpowering aroma anymore.

The pipes at the pump station are apparently blocked and as a result, the sewer now flows into the streets of Toekomsrus Extension 2.

Toekomsrus Councilor Bernard Rooskrantz says that this has been happening for some years now and says that to date, not a finger has been lifted by the Randfontein Local Municipality to solve this persisting problem.

According to him, it is ridiculous that residents are made to live in such conditions.

“Toekomsrus residents are expected to pay R85 a month for the maintenance of the sewer pump station which is included in their rates and taxes.

“What bothers me is the fact that there is no maintenance happening here.

“We want the municipality to explain to us where that money goes,” says Rooskrantz.

“The municipality is well aware of these problems, yet no mention is made in the recently released budget of money with which to repair the broken pump.”

The Herald has contacted municipal spokesperson Lucky Chiya who was not immediately available for comment.
