A 28-year old man died instantly when he was hit by a train while allegedly illegally walking across a railway crossing near Aureus on 1 June.

The man apparently walked across the railway line that runs past Aureus toward Carletonville at approximately 6.45am when the accident occurred.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst, the circumstances and the reason why the pedestrian was on the railway line, is still under investigation.

Ernst has issued a warning to pedestrians that crossing railway lines anywhere else than at legal, marked crossings in illegal and anyone caught doing so will be prosecuted.

“Tragic incidents such as this one can be prevented if pedestrians adhere to the law,” says Ernst.
