Residents of Randfontein have had an uncomfortable couple of months recently due to the high number of unnanounced electricity outtages experienced.

This, it seems is to become the order of the day if an urgent plan to implement much needed maintenance and repairs on the town’s substations is not made soon.

The Herald has received numerous complaints recently with regard to the condition of the numerous substations that supply the town with electricity, and the regular unannounced outages, explained by the municipality as ’emergency repairs and maintenance’ seem to corroborate claims that the substations are in dire need of an overhaul.

The latest area to fall prey to unexpected electricity outages was Culemborg Park, where electricity was off from approximately 3pm on Saturday, 1 June, until around the same time on Sunday.

This, according to the Herald’s sources, was caused by a cable problem.

The agricultural holdings areas of Wheatlands, Bootha Plots, Loumarina, Klein Elandsvlei, Townlands, and Ooster Plots will, according to our sources, not have electricity for at least the next two to three days due to the malfunction of the main intake transformer (valued at approximately R5 million) at the substation near Droogeheuwel.

It is at this stage unclear whether the municipality has another transformer in stock.
