LETTER: Where is the law and order at Dan Tloome?

I am writing to you to voice my concern. I got angry recently when I visited my friend who lives in the Dan Tloome flats. After parking my car, there were these three boys throwing stones at each other next to my car and I called them and asked questions.

How can you guys play with stones like this when cars are parked here? Their response was, “Sorry, Sir!”

I asked them where they stayed and where they were from. Do you have a house here? They told me they’re renting to a person who is a block chairperson or something. Wow, really?

A friend confirmed that people are illegally renting vacant RDP flats, with 42 units per block, and paying rent to tenants. This raises questions about corruption and the criminality of opening property without consent, as enforced by law enforcement.

How does someone who is assigned to enforce the law break it in this manner? Surely opening someone’s property without his/ her consent is a criminal offence?

I work for a government department and I can easily report this but I want the people of this place to take responsibility first, and elect people to investigate this matter, when they get the facts the community must remove those corrupt individuals from positions with immediate effect.

The Randfontein Herald reported recently that Dan Tloome’s housing project was in the spotlight yet again. ActionSA RandWest chairperson Lewatle Diale stated at the time they had uncovered distressing shortcomings. Diale then arranged a thorough meeting with the community to discuss solutions for the housing project and called on the municipality and the Gauteng provincial government to urgently assess the work done by the contractor to ensure that all affected families of unsafe buildings are accommodated with safe living space — Ed.
