Female officers man roadblocks ahead of Women’s Day

The Randfontein SAPS in conjunction with other police stations across the West Rand embarked on massive roadblock on Randfontein Road on 7 August ahead of Women’s Day.

More than 50 female police and traffic officers were hard at work conducting searches on vehicles and motorists.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, this is an initiative by female police officers within the cluster in the West Rand.

“In line with Women’s month, we thought that it was best that female officers be out and about doing the roadblocks themselves.

“We have come to realize that property related crimes are on the increase in Randfontein so we were also looking for possible stolen items in cars and unlicensed firearms.

“Female traffic officers inspected numerous vehicles to determine their road worthiness and various fines were issued to drivers of vehicles that were found not to be compliant with the law.

“We as women have a role to play in trying to keep Randfontein a crime-free town,” says Ernst.

She adds that after the roadblock, the officers will move to another area in Randfontein to distribute pamphlets about domestic violence.
