Randfontein Golf Club business robbery: safe blown open with explosives

There are speculations that the break in was orchestrated by management in order to claim the losses from insurance.

The Randfontein Golf Club was broken into and a safe inside the office building blown open with explosives at approximately 1.35am on 6 August.

According to a source at the club, three men entered the club unnoticed in the early hours of morning.

“It seems as though they made their way into one of the offices inside the golf club where the safe is situated.

“It is understood that they attached explosives to the safe and blew it open.

“At this point, I cannot comment as to what they fled with or how they managed to flee but I can say that they took off with a large amount of money,” says the source.

Another source has revealed that the alarm at the club was not triggered.

It is not clear whether the alarm was activated at the time of the incident.

During the Herald’s visit to the club, a journalist managed to see the safe that had been blown open and a pile of papers scattered on the floor.

One of the workers at the club shut the door and escorted the reporter to the manager of the club who is only known as Jimmy.

The Herald was not permitted to take photographs at the scene.

Jimmy refused to comment and stopped just short of physically removing the journalist from the premises.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, a security guard on the premises spotted one of the suspects at approximately 1.55am.

“The security guard spotted a suspicious masked and armed man from a distance.

“He immediately ran to the gate and called for back up from one of his colleagues and went to investigate but the men had already fled from the scene.

“Upon further investigation inside the office building, the guards came across a blown up safe and immediately called the police.

“An undisclosed amount of money was taken from the safe,” says Ernst.

She adds that material found at the scene have been submitted for forensic analysis which will hopefully shed more light on the kind of explosives used.
