A Randfontein resident has been caught red-handed offloading rubbish from his trailer and his bakkie and dumping it into the veld next to the Greenhills Cemetery on 22 July.
According to an eyewitness who does not wish to be named, the man together with his accomplice drove around the area for some time in a bakkie with a trailer full of rubbish in tow to check whether or not there were onlookers nearby.
“Knowing that the area is infamous for illegal dumping, I suspected that the man had intentions to offload the rubbish right next to the cemetery.
“I immediately stopped my car and went to approach him on foot.
“I confronted him and told him to rather go to the Randfontein Dumping Site.,” says the woman.
The man did not take kindly to her suggestion and immediately insulted her right in front of her three children and called her names.
“All I was trying to do is prevent further illegal dumping in this area and in turn I get insulted.
“The man even threatened me in front of my children.
“So, I went back into my car and filmed him from there.
“I just hope this exposes the kinds of activities that continue to destroy our town,” says the woman.
According to Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya, illegal dumping is rife in Randfontein and municipal workers are constantly trying to put it to a halt.
“It is really frustrating to have residents who still do this despite municipality’s efforts to keep the town clean.
“It is really just an unnecessary setback that we can all do without.
“I urge anyone who might come across people dumping rubbish where they are not supposed to, to inform us.
“It is against the law and they will be fined.
“We have demarcated dumping sites that people need to make use of.” says Chiya.
