Mandela Day a success at old age home

"As a municipality, I think that it is important to help out where we can. It is one of the many ways to help alleviate numerous struggles within communities."

The Westonaria Local Municipality celebrated Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July by giving back to the community of Bekkersdal.

According to Westonaria Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Nonkoliso Tundzi, this was in line with their aim to honour the father of the nation by reaffirming his legacy of giving 67 minutes to help the needy.

On the day, municipal workers took to the Bekkerdal Old Age Home to do maintenance work and cleaned the premises.

“We are glad that people were kind enough to give 67 minutes of their time to help better the lives of others; be it through cleaning or donations, we welcome and appreciate all the help.

“It really made a difference to people’s lives and that is the aim,” says Tundzi.

She adds that after their service at the old age home, municipal workers proceeded to the Simunye Multipurpose Hall for the donation of beds and other valuable items.

“As a municipality, I think that it is important to help out where we can. It is one of the many ways to help alleviate numerous struggles within communities,” says Tundzi.
