Making all the right moves on stage

Youngsters showcased their theatre skills at St John Divine Orphanage Centre.

Talented thespians gathered at the St John Divine Orphanage Centre in Mohlakeng for the Masifundisane School Drama Festival recently.

According to organiser Sam Modieginyana, who is an actor both on stage and screen not to mention a filmmaker, an event like this one was necessary to revive theatre in the townships.

“What we could pick up from this event was the high level of untapped talent among youth and teens. This called for development programmes like workshops at schools. We thank Premier Panyaza Lesufi who has incorporated education with sport, art and culture. Most of the plays reflect the current social challenges from gender-based violence to drug and alcohol abuse,” Sam said.

The adjudicators make a decision.

Phahama School of Specialisation won the Best School Award with Lukhanyo High School in second place followed by AB Phokompe Secondary School in third. In the Primary School section, Sedimosang Primary School scooped first place, Tswelelo second and Matlapaneng third.

In the Outstanding Individual Performance category in the High School section, Ntando Yolisa Witlie from Lukhanyo won Best Actress while Pakala Mangwegape won Best Actor.

Zongezile Zengele, Phoza Cedrick, Boitumelo Leping, Pakala Mangwegape and Ntando Yolisa.

In the Primary School section, Best Actress was awarded to Letlhogonolo Sere from Malerato Primary School with Tshepo Modise from Sedimosang winning Best Actor.
