Another five dogs euthanised by RandWest SPCA

The RandWest SPCA says they are inundated with calls from animals with skin conditions.

The RandWest SPCA said they are dealing with an unprecedented influx of animals suffering from horrific skin conditions.

RandWest SPCA Manager René van Straten explained they recently came across five dogs with serious skin conditions. They were found in areas from Mohlakeng to Middelvlei.

She further noted in Middelvlei, the conditions of the dogs were especially bad as one dog even had open wounds from scratching and eating his skin.

The dogs all had to be euthanised due to the severity of the conditions.

“It is a condition that is very contagious and takes long to recover from. Unfortunately, we do not have the facilities for that,” said Van Straten.

She advised pet owners to get professional help when their animals have skin conditions which can range from hair loss to red and irritated skin. The cause can range from allergies to small parasites on the skin. The animals picked up by the SPCA had sarcoptic mange mites.

She added many people have their own opinions, but the longer people wait to get the right information and medications the longer the skin condition will take to heal.

“Please never put car oil on your dog, it is an old wives tale for mange, but it is just that, an old wives tale and you are only making the dog sicker,” she said.

She added some of the skin conditions from animals can also infect people.

“If your animals need medical attention it is you as the owner’s responsibility to ensure he gets it without delay. I understand people are struggling and medical costs are high, but the animal did not ask to be in your care. If you want a pet you need to care for it.”

“There are many organisations and vets offering help to people, if not possible, you have to make the right decision and end the animal’s suffering. There is no excuse for leaving an animal to suffer,” stated René.

She mentioned any donations for the animals in their care would be greatly appreciated.
