Reviving a love of the parkrun in Randfontein

Parkrun enthusiasts are hoping to bring back the Randfontein parkrun, a first since 2019.

RandMark runners and former regulars at the parkrun in Randfontein are hoping to start it up again. The last time it took place was in 2019.

Karin Bezuidenhout, the running representative at RandMark, explained the parkrun used to take place at the Randfontein Golf Course, but since Covid, the course has seriously decayed and it is not safe for runners anymore. She noted the parkrun is a 5km distance off the road, it can not take place on public roads due to safety reasons.

They are now hoping to start the parkrun up again, but they need the community’s help to do so. They need a place to run, even if it is not a 5km distance, they can do a double lap to complete the distance. They also need volunteers to help out at the parkrun.

She continued that about 200 people used to show up for the run on special occasions and around 80 to 100 on average.

She noted the parkrun is a great way for people to get fit as well as a good family outing. People do not have to complete the 5km either, they can finish the 2.5km distance as well. It is also a guaranteed event, every Saturday, for free and some even get points from their medical aid for completing the run.

“I love running and I want to pass it on to other people,” said Karin.

Another enthusiastic runner, Rentia Chapman (56) explained she has been running every single one of the Randfontein parkruns since she first started. The difference for her is the safety of the parkrun. She runs on the road as well but stated you then inhale the fumes from the passing cars, whereas at the parkrun this is not the case. There are also marshals to keep you safe and you are among people.

“You feel safe, you don’t need to run with pepper spray or a taser. The fresh air is good for your lungs. The entire atmosphere is better, you don’t have to dress up. The company is the most fun along with the encouragement from other runners. The parkrun is just amazing.”

She noted even though she loves to compete in races, the parkrun, with the fresh air, scenery and people, is still her favourite.

She added her husband Gordon even walks the 5km with a prosthetic knee, saying ‘it is the best thing he could have done for his health and his knee’.

They now go to Sterkfontein or Ruimsig to still do their parkrun but this however is far to drive every Saturday.

“The parkrunners are for family, you can bring your children and your grandchildren, who can walk. There is always a sweeper, a person who walks at the back until the last person has finished. It is so healthy for every child and parent to do this,” said Rentia.

Any person who wants to volunteer or has a place for the runners to use can contact Karin on 084 500 0522.
