Local athletes triumph at Cross Country Championships

Rand West City athletes excelled during a Cross Country Championship event recently.

Athletes from across Rand West City made their presence felt at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Cross Country Championships held at the Kagiso Sports Complex recently.

Kefilwe Molefe (running for Mohlakeng Colossus Athletics Club) placed second in the Women’s Sub Veteran section with a time of 18 minutes and 48 seconds while the winner, Kate van Jaarsveldt (Nedbank), crossed the finish line in a time of 17 minutes flat. Third place went to Charlotte Venter (Boksburg Athletics Club) with a time of 19 minutes and eight seconds.

Kefilwe is now looking forward to running alongside her twin sister Keneilwe Sesing at the SA National Cross Country Championships in Vanderbiljpark on September 7.

“I can’t wait to run alongside my sister who will be representing Mpumalanga while I will be in CGA colours,” Kefilwe said.

Warriors of West Athletics Club in Westonaria also reached the podium on many occasions. First, Cornelia Joubert triumphed in the Senior Women’s 10km event with a time of 43 minutes and 25 seconds. Then, Tumelo Mabote from Mohlakeng Athletics Club came second in the Youth 2km event with a time of seven minutes and seven seconds.

Also, Kabelo Melamu from Boxer Athletics Club came second in the Senior Men’s race with a time of 33 minutes and 52 seconds while his training partner Andries Sesedi (Nedbank) placed first in the Senior Men’s 4km event with a time of 12 minutes and 56 seconds.
