MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development and other stakeholders visit Bekkersdal Agripark

Farmers in the area had the opportunity to raise the concerns they face with their operations.

The Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, met with various farmers to discuss the challenges they face and how they can be resolved.

In a statement, Danisile Sathekge, communications officer for the Office of the MEC, explained that Ramokgopa, accompanied by Mayor William Matsheke, visited Bekkersdal Agripark on August 13. Farmers in the area had the opportunity to express their grievances, challenges and the assistance they needed from the department.

The concerns the farmers raised are the lack of water at the Agripark and the inconvenience of power cuts and poor electricity supply in the area, which impact their farming operations and productivity.

“MEC Ramokgopa listened attentively to the farmers’ concerns and assured them that the department would work closely with the municipality to address these pressing issues. She emphasised the importance of collaboration between the provincial and local governments in supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring the success of the Bekkersdal Agripark,” said Sathekge.

The group also toured one of the tunnels in the park. The tunnel is run by resident Matebogo Mouwane, who is deaf. She is also the founder of the VoiceOutDeaf NPO. She has created around 20 job opportunities for those with hearing impairments since 2016.

“The MEC commended Mouwane’s efforts and the contribution she has made to the agricultural sector in Gauteng, honouring women farmers like her who are breaking barriers and creating opportunities for the disabled community,” said Sathekge.

“As the department, we are committed to working hand-in-hand with our farmers to overcome the challenges they face,” stated Ramokgopa.

Matsheke added, “The Rand West City Municipality is dedicated to supporting our local farmers and creating an enabling environment for the Bekkersdal Agripark to thrive. We will work closely with the department to find sustainable solutions to the issues raised by our farmers.”

The visit provided a platform for open communication and collaboration between the department, the municipality, and the farming community.
