More than 300 arrests were made during Operation Basadi which was mostly led by brave women in the police service.

In commemoration of Women’s Month, the West Rand’s women in blue made a significant impact through Operation Basadi.

According to the Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, mostly women have taken to the streets recently in all districts including Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, Tshwane, West Rand and Johannesburg. This included conducting roadblocks with the traffic police.

“They succeeded in arresting more than 300 offenders across these regions,” he said.

Female traffic officers were also out in large numbers.

Their focus was mainly on arresting illegal immigrants, drug-related crimes, the selling of illicit cigarettes, second-hand goods act violations, possession of precious metals, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and non-compliance with liquor regulations.

“Operation Basadi highlights the dedication and vital role of women in law enforcement in maintaining law and order as well as ensuring community safety and security. The operation also prioritised crimes, particularly against women and children.”
