Two arrested for the alleged theft of 52 cellphones

Police tracked down two perpetrators who had stolen cellphones in their possession.

After police recovered 52 stolen cellphones and multiple other mobile devices, two alleged robbers were arrested.

Chairperson of the Rural Safety Committee for Randfontein-Mohlakeng police, JP de Beer, claimed on August 1 a resident was robbed of his cellphone on Main Road in the Randfontein CBD. De Beer explained an informant notified police about two men who were suspected to be involved with the incident.

De Beer confirmed a team was dispatched to search for the two in the Randfontein CBD.

Thereafter, he mentioned that police also began with surveillance and that same evening an operations team was led by Warrant Officer Fanie Botha. However, De Beer stated the exact location could not be confirmed and the police decided to allow more time for the operation.

The following day, Warrant Officer Michael Bester led the team to search within a six-block radius.

“An operational decision was taken to continue the search in the evening when the perpetrators would be stationary,” De Beer said.

According to De Beer, the team was able to trace the perpetrators by using the stolen phone’s location. At about 22:30 on August 2, Botha led the team to search the premises where the men were located and arrested.

The perpetrators were consequently arrested after police found four phones in their possession and a further 52 cellphones in a building. Various chargers and Apple devices were also recovered at the scene.
