Motor vehicle safety a priority for cops

The police along with other crime prevention departments held a safety awareness campaign for motorists.

The Randfontein police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit in conjunction with the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the Youth Crime Prevention Desk recently created awareness around motor vehicle safety.

The Social Crime Prevention Unit’s co-ordinator at the Randfontein Police Station, Sergeant Portia Mabala said the event was held at the four-way stop on the corner of Union Street and Lazaar Road. In total 100 pamphlets containing safety tips were distributed and a total of 50 people were reached.

“The aim was to educate the community to be vigilant and stand against crime. This includes theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles as well as hijackings and smash and grabs.

“Motorists were also urged not to buy stolen goods and to not leave valuable items inside the vehicle, including laptops, handbags, and cellphones. They were further encouraged to ensure windows and doors were properly locked. Not to carry large amounts of cash when shopping. Not to allow strangers to help them at an ATM or the parking lot. To report any illegal activity around them.”
