Mohlakeng duo aim for the top of the music charts

Two artists from Rand West City are making big strides in the music industry and dream of releasing their debut album soon.

Nkosinathi Gumede and Velile Rum, two Mohlakeng artists, strive to reach the top of the charts in the music industry.

The duo, best known as Brothers For Life, started their music career in primary school.

According to Nkosinathi, their passion for music originated from listening to legendary musicians while growing up. These musicians played a major role in becoming artists.

“Our favourite part of the craft is performing on stage and seeing the audience respond and interact positively to our music. We have the advantage of expressing our truest feelings through the music we make,” Nkosinathi said.

Their biggest motivation is other artists who have made a name in the music industry. Another motivation that stands clear to them is the individual lives that people live in townships hence why they base their lyrics on real-life, contemporary issues that are currently affecting the less privileged.

Both of the artists are proud of their progress and achievements. In 2017, they shot a high-definition music video without having to strike a deal or receive sponsorships. Nkosinathi stated that Brothers For Life did everything themselves. He added that they also managed to record 70% of their album in a quality studio.

Although they have achieved a lot of success, they still want more. They dream of releasing their debut album along with a large number of streams, downloads, and plenty of gigs. One of their long-term goals is to receive a record deal.

Even though they are building a career out of their passion, Nkosinathi admitted that they do face challenges. Their biggest challenges are buying soundtracks, paying for studio time and shooting music videos.

These have not stopped them from achieving their goal and therefore they have an inspirational message to upcoming artists.

“The music industry is tough and it requires you to grow crocodile skin. It demands a lot of money so it is best to get a side hustle to supplement the financial part of the craft. However, do not let this stop you from following your passion. You have to take risks.”
