Fitness is a ‘wonder drug’ — Physiotherapist

Physiotherapist speaks about why fitness is important.

The Randfontein Herald spoke to physiotherapist Bruce Barker about the importance of fitness.

According to Barker, physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that enhances the quality of life for individuals and communities by restoring and optimising movement (habilitation) and function.

Barker emphasised that cardiovascular fitness is the key pillar of health. He explained it as a combination of strength, agility, balance, and ability which is important in all stages of life. He claimed that all areas in life can be improved by optimised fitness levels. He referred to fitness as a ‘wonder drug’.

Furthermore, Barker mentioned the negative effects of not applying fitness to your daily life.

“Individuals who fail to make fitness a priority, suffer the consequences of chronic disease, reduced quality of sleep, increased susceptibility to infections, increased rates of depression and other mental health challenges.

“A person can prevent these cons by moving regularly. Find activities that you enjoy. The best form of exercise is the one you do regularly. Do not neglect strength training. Make sure that your eating pattern matches your exercise demands. Eating a low carbohydrate diet with an emphasis on protein and healthy fat is probably more important to your fitness than doing endless amounts of fitness exercises,” he stated.

Barker is the founder of Barker Physiotherapists and also has a Master’s Degree in Physiotherapy.
