Spartans impress at National Championships in Cape Town

Despite having to compete against numerous competitors from around the country, Spartans Karate Dojo from Westonaria walked away with a handful of medals.

Two karatekas from the Spartans Karate Dojo impressed in the ring during the National Championships held in Cape Town.

“The competition was stiff, but our athletes performed extremely well, bringing home three individual medals and one medal in the team event,” said Spartans public relations officer Martin Venter.

He further explained the event was held at the Sunningdale Sports Complex. The members from the dojo formed part of the Gauteng provincial team to represent the province. They ultimately earned their provincial colours, recognised by the Gauteng Sports Council.

Samantha Maré competed in the -68kg female kumite (fighting) category where she walked away with the bronze medal. Juan-Drè Loots competed in among other the -75kg male kumite category winning silver and two bronze medals respectively.

The instructor of the dojo, Sensei Enzo Pillay, also a provincial coach, represented Gauteng at the championships.

Martin revealed Gauteng Karate ended up placing second in the country saying, “We just missed out on top honours to the home team of the Western Cape.

“The competition is the toughest of the year with the best six competitors from each province taking part. Spartans Karate managed to achieve its best national performance and now aiming to do one better at the Junior National Championships.”
