RHS is on top of its debating game in Randburg

Senior debating team from RHS makes history after winning the major provincial debating league.

Randfontein High School’s (RHS) senior debating team flew the school and town flag high after winning the South African Council for English Education (SACEE) provincial debating league.

The competition took place at Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge in Randburg.

SACEE operates the largest and most historic debating league in the province annually which allows debating teams from different schools to go head-to-head for the prestigious title.

RHS recently issued a statement saying that their senior team first competed in the regional rounds where they finished second.

Thereafter, the team finished fourth in the provincial preliminary rounds to book their place in the knockouts and eventually go all the way, thus making history.

Their path to victory included defeating Parktown High School for Girls in the quarter-final, Brescia House School in the semi-final, and hosting Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge in the final to win the league title.

The team consists of some of the school’s brightest minds such as Okuhle Sibeko, Lesego Serobatse who is a member of the national debating squad, Tshiamo Mongoegi, and Boitshepo Mkhontwana, who is a member of the national junior debating squad.

According to Serobatse, “It was a historic moment for our debating squad. This type of moment is something that I’ve dreamed of since I started debating. It was a testament to our hard work.”

Meanwhile, Mongoegi shared the same sentiments and was thrilled at their achievement.

“Winning SACEE was an exhilarating moment. It is a historic achievement which fills me with great pride and pleasure,” concluded Mongoegi.
