Sewage still flows at Eike Park house for more than a year

During the Herald's latest visit, nothing had changed. The drain is now covered by long grass and is unmarked, making it dangerous for pedestrians.

Imagine waking up to the smell of sewage every day for over a year and not being able to do much about it.

That’s the reality for Eike Park resident Elize van der Westhuizen, who has had sewage flowing outside her house since March 2022.

To date, more than a year later, not much has been done to address her situation, as she alleges that municipal workers have not solved her problem since. This is despite constantly reporting it.

The Randfontein Herald is aware of this, as it did coverage of the drain in question on numerous occasions.

Upon our latest visit, nothing had changed. The drain is now covered by long grass and is unmarked, making it dangerous for pedestrians.

In our latest interview with Van der Westhuizen, she expressed that she is frustrated with the municipality and is desperate for her problem to be addressed.

“I reported the problem to the municipality in March 2022 and again in November. It’s now mid-September and we still sit with the same problem. They just keep saying that they will come but nothing ever gets done. At this stage, I cannot even drive out of my yard without being disgusted.

“I can’t even braai over the weekend because the smell here is unbearable, especially if the wind blows. Need I mention that I can’t breathe in my own house, yet I must pay for sewage fees,” said Van der Westhuizen.

The Herald approached Rand West City Local Municipality spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa who said he is aware of the situation. He has since instructed the relevant department to give the matter serious attention.

He added that he would revert to the Herald regarding work being done.
