Kids learn a thing or two about local SPCA

Animal welfare is on top of the local SPCA's list.

Scores of learners from Basa Protea Glen Primary School recently visited the RandWest SPCA’s Randfontein branch and interacted with the staff and animals in their care.

This was on four different occasions throughout August with the latest visit on August 18.

RandWest SPCA manager Naomi de Beer said the purpose of the visit was for learners to learn about animal welfare.

“We approached the school recently and they asked us to host their Grade Six learners and impart important information regarding caring for animals. Their learners were busy with a project that they needed to complete and it was focused on animals and the welfare of animals.

“We had to teach them about what we do as the SPCA and give them information about animal cruelty. We also had to show them what is allowed and what is not allowed when caring for animals,” said De Beer.

She added that in total, 120 learners visited their kennels and that the receptionist Gladys Ntshweu-Sonkosi made sure that each learner left the place with adequate information about the SPCA and animals as a whole and how to report animal cruelty.
